Attended Plön Castle boarding school.
1970
High school graduation in Hamburg. Moved to Berlin. There, internship at the advertising agency Treuwerth & Gerlach. Works as copywriter. Travelling as back- packer through the USA; hitchhiked with a friend from New York to San Francisco.

Studied at the Berlin University of Fine Arts. Enrolled in the painting and drawing class of Prof. Gecelli. Art history lectures at Berlin’s Technical University.
1972-1974
Transfer to Hamburg’s University of Fine Arts. In its design class, construction of a special play tent for children. It was patented, published in a major housing magazine and selected by the German Design Council to be displayed at international design shows.
1974-1975
One year of „World Studies“ at the San Francisco Art Institute, California.

1976
Back in Hamburg to study „Visual Communication“ at the University of Fine Arts (HfbK). Besides studying temporary jobs as camera assistant and sound recordist in a small television team.
1977
Shooting a first short film called „The Death of My Father“ (10’), based on a poem by Alfred Behrens and co-directed with him.
1978-1979
„FAMILIENKINO“ (Family Cinema) - a tv documentary series, compiled from amateur films from Germany (1900-1970) for NDR & WDR. 7 episodes x 45’, written & directed together with Alfred Behrens. Adolf-Grimme Award.
1979
Rediscovery of the automotive pioneer Clärenore Stinnes (born 1901), eldest daughter of the German Ruhr tycoon Hugo Stinnes. She was the first to drive in the late 1920s around the world in a normal street car, accompanied by the Swedish camera operator Söderström (1893-1976). A last copy of their documentary film was in the bag, carried by Clärenore when meeting her in Hamburg. After viewing this sensitive Nitro print our close cooperation was agreed, aiming at public appreciation of this long-forgotten and unique expedition. A series of interviews with Clärenore was followed by an article written for „Stern“, a major German magazine. After the publication together with Söderström’s photos all the media jumped on Clärenore’s story.
Co-founder of the Hamburg Film Fund (Hamburger Filmbüro e.V.) - Germany’s first association of filmmakers to promote and finance Hamburg’s film projects on a non-bureaucratic, self-operated basis. As member of he board in charge of the young generation of filmmakers.

Book publication: "Family Cinema - History of Amateur Film in Germany" 2 volumes, Rowohlt-Verlag.
„Die Frau, die um die Welt fuhr“ (The Woman Who Drove Around the World) - TV adaption (45’) of the Clärenore-Stinnes-Film of 1930 „Im Auto durch zwei Welten“ (Across Two Worlds in a Car), directed together with Clärenore for the public Bavarian television BR.
1981
Book publication: „Söderström’s Photo Diary“ compiled from photos and diaries made during the world expedition by Carl-Axel Söderström and Clärenore Stinnes 1927-1929. Published for Wolfgang Krüger Verlag / Fischer, Frankfurt.
Studied Filmmaking in California, at the San Francisco Art Institute with support the German Academic Exchange Program DAAD. There, attending the film class of underground filmmaker George Kuchar for one year.

Working as „summer cameraman“ for Alfred Behrens’ documentary film „Berliner Stadtbahnbilder“ (Berlin Rapid Transit Pics). ZDF, 60 minutes. Bundesfilmpreis (National German Film Award) - Deutscher Kamerapreis (German Camera Award).
„Mottenburger Alltag“ (All day life in Hamburg’s district Ottensen) TV documentary (45’) written and directed together with Alfred Behrens for North German television NDR.
1983
„Mottenburger Geschichten“ - Neighborhood stories told by senior citizens living in Ottensen, which used to be a poor and working class district of Hamburg. Interviews recorded together with Alfred Behrens for a radio play (60’) and broadcasted by NDR radio.

Meeting Samuel Beckett in Paris, together with Alfred Behrens. Discussion about a major feature film project, based on Becketts novel „Murphy“ (published 1938) - which has always been rejected. Finally Beckett suggests to accept two different drafts, from which he would consider one for realizing a „Murphy“ film.
First research and film trip to South Dakota f/ USA or a feature documentary, called „Black Hills“. Smoking a peace pipe in a circle of Lakota chiefs and headmen of other native American tribes. They acknowledge this project and allows filming in Pine Ridge reservation and on sacred land of the Lakota people.
1984
Sound recordings in Texas for a radio play „Journey to Dallas“ (60’), written and directed together with Thomas Crecelius for North German Radio NDR.

„Black Hills“ - Feature documentary film (88’) about the Lakota people and their sacred land in South Dakota, confiscated and occupied by the whiteman until now. Written, directed and produced for Southwest German television SWR and cinema.

„Im Auto durch zwei Welten“ (Across Two Worlds in A Car) TV version (70’) of the 1930’s original movie, supplemented by an interview with Clärenore Söderström (who got married to the Swedish cameraman after the expedition). Produced for NDR television.
„Robin Wood, The wood is dying - Protocol of a blockade“: Two documentaries (45’ each) about activities of the same name environmentalists. Written and directed for South West television SWR.
1987
As solo-cameraman documenting the „First European Hang Gliding Expedition“, crossing the continent from Perth to Sydney.


1987-1988
„Strom der Wünsche“ (River of Desire) Feature documentary (55’) about the river Elbe. Filming in West Germany, East Germany GDR and Czechoslovakia for a movie without words, directed and produced for ZDF television, Kleines Fernsehspiel. Camera: Hanno Hart & Michael Kuball.
1989
„Hauptstrom“ (Main Stream) - Monologue radio play (52’), written and directed for NDR / SDR radio. Narrator: Siegfried Kernen.
„LocoMotion“ - Video essay (80’), a train track movie traveling through Germany, France, Spain, Italy and Switzerland. Written, directed, recorded and produced together with Alfred Behrens for NDR television.
Completion of the fully developed screenplay „Murphy“ based on the draft that Samuel Beckett had chosen. He writes his last letter on 19 November 1989: „Dear Michael Kuball, Thank you for yours of 8 Nov. with script and Yellow Asylum letter. I am ill & can not help. Forgive. Please go ahead without me. With best wishes for you and all associates. Sam Beckett.“ Sadly, he dies one month later. As a result, the project fails due to a limited one-year option granted by the Beckett Estate and an insufficient support from German film funds.

LA CAMERA STYLO Film Collection GmbH is founded by Michael Kuball in Hamburg to save, collect and distribute historic amateur films for the public.
1998-2000
„Soul of a Century“ - a feature documentary compiled from European amateur films of the 20th century. Written, directed and produced by Michael Kuball. Nominated for the EMMY Award - Premio Euro Doc (Italy) for the best European documentary film - Gold World Medal New York - International FOCAL Award.

„Hamburg - 4 Days and 1 Night“ a DVD edition compiled from movies made in Hamburg, including films shot by Armin Wick in the 1950s around Alster and Elbe.

„Libya 41“ - Private films made by German soldiers during the war in Africa and commented by them for a DVD edition. Researched and directed by Michel Kuball.
